Biomedical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, IndiaThe Indian Institute of Technology Madras is amongst the top seven institutions established by the Government of India to provide education at international standards. The Biomedical Engineering Division at this Institute, started in 1971, has made significant contributions in the development of this field. The degrees offered are MTech, MS and PhD, as well as courses to undergraduate students in Biomedical Engineering. The specializations of faculty members include Biomedical Image and Signal Processing, Biomechanics, Rehabilitation Engineering, Ergonomics and Medical Optics. The prominent contributions include optical characterization of biological tissues, engineering analysis of diabetic feet for prevention and healing of plantar ulcers, application of neural network analysis in medical diagnostics, and aids for handicapped children. Besides the regular degree programs this Division has also contributed to the promotion of this field by organizing short term courses in Biomedical Engineering nationally and holding conferences on specialized topics internationally. Recently we organized the Second International Conference on Medical Diagnostic Techniques and Procedures from April 1-3, 2004 at this Institute. Distinguished scientists from various countries were invited to deliver lectures along with contributed papers. The various topics included biomedical imaging and signal processing, biomechanics, microcirculatory and hemorheological techniques and applications, artificial neural network applications in medical diagnostics, biomedical instrumentation, optical characterization of biological tissues, and drug delivery systems. During the concluding session the delegates highlighted the newer emerging areas and stressed international collaboration.
