Report on the 3rd IEE Seminar on "Appropriate Medical Technology for Developing Countries"

The 3rd IEE Seminar on "Appropriate Medical Technology for Developing Countries" was held at the IEE in London on Wednesday 4 February 2004. It followed the 1st and 2nd seminars which were held in February 2000 and February 2002, respectively.

The seminar had two main themes "Managing Healthcare Technology" and "Devices and Systems". The authors of the papers come from many countries including Australia, Cameroon, DR of Congo, Egypt, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Serbia, South Africa, Taiwan, UK, USA and Venezuela.

Topics covered included: management of healthcare technology in Vanuatu, application of EHTP methodology to plan primary health care services in Mozambique, global medical device nomenclature, healthcare provision in Gambia, optimizing limited resources in Nepal, an appropriate technology anesthetic ventilator and medical waste disposal.

Delegates clearly found the seminar to be enjoyable and worthwhile based on their comments during and after the event. This series of seminars has provided an important forum for those involved in providing healthcare technology in the developing world. It is hoped to hold the next seminar in 2006. Details will be posted at http://www.iee.org/pn/healthtech/

A detailed report on the seminar, which includes a substantial synopsis of each of the 36 papers, can be found at:
