Seminar on Diabetes Treatment

Warsaw, May 2003

An International Seminar on:
"Technical, biological and bio-technical approaches of the diabetes treatment. Recent development and perspectives" took place in Warsaw from the 20th to 21st May 2003.

In this scientific meeting organised by the International Centre of Biocybernetics Polish Academy of Sciences, chaired by Prof. David Klonoff (USA) and Prof. Jan M. Wójcicki (Poland) over 120 scientists and diabeteologists were gathered. The program of the seminar covered:

  • Biological approaches of the diabetes treatment, which referred to pancreas and islets transplantation,
  • Bio-technical solutions, so-called "hybrid artificial pancreas", which are related to application of the micro and macro-encapsulation of the pancreatic islets,
  • Technical support of the diabetes treatment was focused on:
    1. Most crucial issues of the blood glucose measurements: non-invasiveness and continuous monitoring.
    2. Application of the telematic systems leading to better education and more frequent contacts between patient and physician.
    3. New forms of insulin delivery (transdermal, inhaled, oral and implantable polymer drug delivery).
  • Electromechanical artificial pancreas realised as a portable and fully implantable close loop system

All lectures were delivered by invited experts from: Canada, Denmark, France, Israel, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Great Britain, and United States. At the end of the seminar a panel discussion concerning future perspec-tives for bio and techno support of diabetes treatment took place. Abstracts and Summary of the Seminar will be published in the Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics journal published by Mary Ann Liebert Inc.
