Heikki TerioI received my M.Sc. in applied physics and electrical engineering in 1983 and a PhD in biomedical engineering in 1989 at the Linköping University of Technology, Sweden. From 1990-92, I worked at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, University Hospital of Linköping designing systems and software for research in neurophysiology and administration of the clinical work. From August 1992 to August 1997 worked at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University Hospital of Northern Sweden, Umeå as the manager of the section for research and development. In August 1997 I was appointed to director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Huddinge University Hospital, Stockholm. I am also a Certified Clinical Engineer. My research work deals with biomedical instrumentation, signal analysis and biomechanics, especially urodynamics. I am also a lecturer in biomedical engineering and during my years in Umeå I started the clinical engineering education program at the University. I have been a board member of the Swedish Society for Medical Engineering and Medical Physics since 1989. Furthermore, I served as Scientific Secretary from 1990-92, Secretary General from 1992-94 and President from 1994-96. I have also taken an active part in the organisation of several conferences and meetings. IFMBE has a very important task to promote research and work in the fields of Biological and Medical Engineering throughout the world. A primary objective is to increase awareness in this field and in some cases to strengthen co-operation between medical doctors and industry. I think that this vision can be accomplished when we consider three activities: information, communication, and co-operation. The Federation must strive to make people aware of its intentions and the possibilities and rewards that working in the field of medicine and healthcare can bring. Information should be increased at all levels: from national societies, international organisations, and governmental organisations. In this way we can make the Federation more prominent. It follows than, to increase the communication between member organisations, national societies, authorities and industries in different countries. We all know that good communication is a prerequisite for co-operation. With good co-operation, we can surely hope for an improved financial standpoint that will, in turn, increase the support and co-operation with new member nations. Department of Biomedical Engineering
