Niilo Saranummi

Niilo Saranummi is Research Professor in Health Technology at the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT). He has worked at VTT since 1975 advancing through different positions starting as a research scientist and heading one of VTT's research laboratories. Since VTT's reorganisation in 1994 into research institutes, he has worked in the unit VTT Information Technology as a Research Professor. His research interests include system architectures, middleware, IST for personalised health and disease management, in one concept "pervasive healthcare". He is also active in innovation, technology transfer and technology policy setting. He has published over 100 papers and chapters in peer-reviewed publications. In 1991-94 he was President of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and in 1994-97 President of the International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM). Currently he is Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions of Information Technology in Biomedicine. He is a Fellow in IFMBE (2000) and AIMBE (2003). He has participated as co-ordinator and partner in more than 30 EU-funded projects in the Framework Programs, since 1987. The most recent of these was the PICNIC project in the IST/Health Telematics program where his role was "chief architect" of a next generation regional healthcare network. In the Biomed 2 program, VTT co-ordinated the IBIS project to develop methods and tools for monitoring the functioning of organs (especially the brain) for applications in critical care and anaesthesia monitoring. Previously, the Biomed program VTT had co-ordinated the project IMPROVE. These projects produced large annotated databases on signals and other observables in critical care and anaesthesia. Prof. Saranummi has been active in standardisation and lead a team in the early 90's, which developed a CEN ENV 12243 on the Healthcare Information Framework. In 1996, he co-founded HL7 Finland, a society affiliated to Health Level Seven. He has extensive experience in working with industry partners.
