Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering

The Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering (N.I.B.E.) was founded in 1999 as as a non-governmental, non-political and non- profit-making national organisation of a trustee status. It was established for the general advancement of bio-medical science and engineering.

NIBE's origins rest on the realisation that pioneering activities of advancing biomedical engineering and sciences, as well as health and human well-being in Nigeria with the application of modern technologies are required. In addition to individual disciplinary contributions, multi- as well inter-disciplinary cooperation between men and women from the broad disciplines of the biological, medical, physical, engineering, environmental and management/ social/ sciences are vital. This inter-disciplinary cooperation is hoped, primarily, to bridge professional gaps and to develop many of our existing endeavours.

Since the inception of NIBE, it has continued to fulfil its responsibility to the society, particulary in the areas of educating the public in developments in the field of biomedical engineering and sciences; in the continuing education of its members; and consolidating the discipline of BME.

To this date, NIBE has organised 3 national biomedical engineering conferences, 3 annual general meetings, 1 professional development course, 9 council meeting and several committee meetings.

NIBE published the Nigerian Journal of Biomedical Engineering, NIBE proceedings, news@nibe and e-nibe.

Membership of NIBE is presently composed of Honorary Fellows (HonFNIBE), Members (MNIBE), Associates and Students numbering a total of 370. It is open to all practicing professionals and corporate bodies in Nigeria whose specialty areas fall within those indicated above.
