New IFMBE Honorary Life Member

Richard Kirsner

Richard Kirsner’s career as a biomedical engineer has included both academic and hospital appointments. He currently holds appointments at Swinburne University of Technology, where he is Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering; at La Trobe University; and at St Vincent’s Hospital, where he was Director of Medical Engineering and Physics from 1977 to 1997. He also works as a consultant biomedical engineer and recent projects have included medico-legal cases, assessment and development of new clinical techniques, a review of the effectiveness and efficiency of the management of medical equipment in several teaching hospitals and a study of hazards in electrotherapy.

After graduating in electrical engineering at the University of Melbourne, he worked in the defence area but returned to the University to study physiology, gaining an MSc with Honours in 1966 and a PhD in biomedical engineering in 1972. During that time he also lectured in electronics and network theory.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (1982), the Australasian College of Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (1989) and the Institution of Engineers (Australia) (1994) where he is a member of the Board of the College of Biomedical Engineers. He has served on a number of Government and professional committees and has been very active in the standards area.

His achievements have been recognised by his receiving the Hugh Wilcock & Geoffrey Kaye Award for contributions to medical and biological engineering, and the David Dewhurst Award for outstanding contribution to the advancement of biomedical engineering. He is a member of the Editorial Board of several journals.

He has been involved for many years in IFMBE activities, formerly as an Administrative Council member (1982-88 and 1991-7) and IFMBE Treasurer (1991-97), and currently as a member of the IFMBE Working Group on Asia-Pacific Activities and the Constitution and Bylaws Committee. He was Chairman of the 2 nd IFMBE Pan-Pacific Sym-posium in Melbourne in 1989. He was a member of the committee that organised the 2003 World Congress in Sydney and was Congress Treasurer. At the national level, he has been Secretary of the Australian Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering since 1983.

Most of his research has been in the physiological measurement area. His current research interests include heart rate variability, the effects of low frequency electromagnetic fields, and the non-invasive measurement of mitral valve function using Doppler ultrasound.
