Third International Workshop on Biosignal Interpretation (BSI99) Chicago, USA, 12-14 June, 1999

The IFMBE and the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) jointly initiated the workshops on biosignal interpretation. The first took place in Denmark and the second workshop was hosted in Japan. Selected papers from these workshops have been published as special issues of Methods of Information in Medicine. The thirrd workshop is being planned to take place in Chicago in mid-99.

Call for papers

The Third International Workshop on Biosignal Interpretation, which is a joint initiative of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) and the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) will be held in Chicago, 12-14 June, 1999. The workshop is also co-sponsored by the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.

This workshop aims to explore the relatively new field of biosignal interpretation including model based biosignal analysis, their interpretation and integration, extending existing signal processing technology for the effective utilisations of biosignals in a practical environment and a deeper understanding of biological functions. This is the third workshop in this emerging research field. The first workshop, IMIA-IFMBE Working Conference on Biosignal Interpretation, was held at Skorping, Denmark in August 1993. The second workshop, IFMBE-IMIA International Workshop on Biosignal Interpretation, was held at Kanagawa, Japan in September 1996.

Scientific program

Leading experts in the field will be invited to deliver state-of-the-art lectures reviewing the important topics in the field. Original contributions are invited, which meet the general scope of the workshop in any of the following subject categories (but not limited to the following):

  1. Mathematical modelling of experimental and clinical biosignals: Non-linear phenomena, chaos or fractal analytical techniques, neural network modelling, cardiovascular and respiratory fluctuations analysis, ECG/EEG/EMG signal analysis and modelling, body surface mapping and inverse imaging, medical imaging, and similar topics
  2. Biosignal processing and pattern analysis: Non-stationary signal processing including time-frequency and time-scale analysis methods, non-linear signal processing including neural networks, fuzzy logic, and pattern analysis methods
  3. Intelligent signal acquisition for patient monitoring and decision support systems: monitoring of real-time data acquisition, ambulatory systems, parameter estimation, decision making, rule based/expert systems, automatic diagnoses, data reasoning, man-machine interface, and such similar topics
  4. Medical informatics: PACS, 3D animations in medicine, clinical information systems, virtual reality applications in medicine, technology for visualising the human anatomy/functions, high performance computing and distributed computing, and similar such topics

To promote in-depth discussions, sufficient time will be assigned for all oral and poster presentations. In addition to scientific paper presentations, both hardware systems and software demonstrations are encouraged for submission to this workshop.

Publication

All accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings. Selected papers will also be published, after peer review process, in a special issue of IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, and in Methods of Information in Medicine.
