Guenter Rau
Chair of the International Academy for Medical and Biological Engineering
Personal Information
Born: November 23, 1938, Germany
Resident: Since 1976 in Aachen, Germany
Education
Prof. Rau received his M.S. in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Karlsruhe, FRG, in 1964 and his Ph.D.
degree in biology from the University of Freiburg, FRG, in 1969. Since 1976, he has been Full Professor as well as
Director of the Helmholtz-Institute for Biomedi-cal Engineering at the Aachen University of Technology, FRG.
Professional Functions
-
Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Aachen University of Technology, Germany (Faculty for Electrical
Engineering and Medical Faculty)
- Head and Director of the Helmholtz-Institute for Biomedical Engineering at Aachen, Germany
Research Interests
Prof. Rau's research interests are in the field of biomedical engineering, particularly biomechanics,
biophysical/biomedical measurements, cryobiology and ergonomics applied to medicine. Up until now, his activities
have been concentrated on surface-EMG. He has performed basic experimental studies and modeling which aim to better
understand the properties of MU behavior. He has developed a special surface-EMG technique (High-Spatial-Resolution-EMG)
that allows the non-invasive detection of the single MU activity. The High-Spatial-Resolution-EMG has been already
advantageously used for the non-invasive diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders.
Research Activities
- Biomechanics of the Cardiovascular System (Heart Valves, Blood Pumps, Fluid Dynamics)
- Cryobiology (Cryopreservation of Cells and Matter, Freeze Drying, Cryosurgery, Heat and Mass Transfer, Cryomicroscopy)
- Biophysical Measuring Techniques (Sensors, Signal Acquisition, Processing, Visualization)
- Surgical Therapy Technology (Minimally Access Diagnosis and Therapy, Endoscopy, Ma-nipulators and Robotics)
- Biomechanics of Human Movement (Analysis, EMG)
Major Appointments in the Past
- International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) - President (1997-1999)
- Vice Chair of the World Council of Biomechanics
- Associate Editor IEEE-EMBS Transactions
- Advisory Board of Economic Action on Biomedical Engineering, Federal Government of Switzerland
- Advisory Board of the Science City Ulm, Germany
- Scientific and Advisory Board of the Institute for Occupational Physiology, University of Dortmund, Germany
