Highlights of ICTP History

Founded in 1964 by Abdus Salam (Nobel Laureate), the International Centre for Theoretical Physics operates under the aegis of two United Nations Agencies - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is regularised by a seat agreement with the Government of Italy which provides the major part of the Centre's funding. One of the main aims of the ICTP is to foster the growth of advanced studies and research in the developing countries. Several thousand scientists, the majority of whom come from the developing countries, visit the Centre every year. In addition to the regular research activity, high-level training courses, workshops, conferences and topical meetings take place at the ICTP throughout the year.
