CZECH SOCIETY FOR BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AND MEDICAL INFORMATICS
MEMBER OF J. E. PURKYNE CZECH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
2003 Activity Report
The Czech Society for Biomedical Engineering and Medical Informatics (CSBME&MI) has focused its attention especially
on three main activity fields:
- organization of scientific conferences,
-
legislative activity - preparation of a new legislation changing in professional positions of biomedical and
clinical engineers in medical care institutions in the Czech Republic,
- editorial activity.
Organization of scientific conferences
The 1st joint Czech - Slovak BME Conference on "Intelligent Systems in Medical Care" was organised by the CSBME&MI
in Prague in September 2002 with more than 80 participants from both countries.
The Society co-operates in preparing local conferences prepared by departments of biomedical engineering at Czech
and Slovak universities. In September 2003 the Measuring and Control Technology in Medical Care Conference will be
organised by the Technical University in Ostrava (more than 50 participants are expected).
Finally, the Society has participated together with some other international societies (Eurasip, IEEE EMBS) in
organisation of the 16th biennial international EURASIP conference "BIOSIGNAL 2002" in Brno at the end of June 2002
(about 150 participants). The BIOSIGNAL conference was mainly prepared by the Department of Biomedical Engineering at
Brno University of Technology.
Legislative activity
To defend professional rights of clinical engineers in the Czech Republic the Society has participated in a very
long-term process of changing Czech legislation dealing with professional positions of all professionals working in
health care (physicians, nurses, biochemists, clinical psychologists, radiologists, clinical engineers, etc.). The
process is highly influenced by the political situation in the Czech Republic but it seems that it could be finally
brought to its end in the near future, maybe at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2004 (due to the
requirements of the EU).
Editorial activity
The Society continues to publish the scientific journal "Physician and Technology - Biomedical Engineering and
Informatics" - 6 issues per year. The journal has been published bilingually (Czech (Slovak) / English) since 2003.
The society had 48 registered members in June 2003. All information can be found on the homepage:

In 2003 the new members of the Society Board were elected but the two representatives at the highest positions have
