New Honorary Life Members


According to the IFMBE policies: "The IFMBE confers the title of "Honorary Life Member" to a select group of individuals. Honorary Life membership is defined in the IFMBE Constitution. The title of Honorary Life Member is bestowed on individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Federation". The IFMBE General Assembly in Chicago voted to accept the following Honorary Life Members based on the citations below.

Kazuhiko Atsumi Japan For his pioneering development of an artificial heart and mechanical-assist devices as well as his work in various fields of MBE including laser medicine. Contributions to the establishment of the Japanese Society of MBE and also the foundation of the MBE Research Institute in the University of Tokyo.
Daniel Laurent France For his pioneering leadership in the study of lung pathophysiology, e.g. gas exchange and lung blood supply, and oxygenators. Contributions to the foundation of French MBE societies and also his activities to promote MBE in the European Commission.
Maciej Nalecz Poland For his MBE leadership through major contributions to the understanding of biocontrol and to the development of artificial organs including an artificial pancreas. Contributions to the foundation of the Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering in Warsaw, Poland and the international WHO collaborating centre for MBE.
Åke Öberg Sweden For his innovative research in biomedical sensors including optical-fibre sensors, and instrumentation and their application to physiological measurements in various fields. Outstanding leadership in support of MBE of developing countries.
Annelise Rosenfalck Denmark For her pioneering work in the development of electrophysiological instrumentation, the research on muscle and nerve physiology and the foundation of an MBE department in Denmark and also long-term contributions to IFMBE activities.
Nandor Richter Hungary For his leadership in the building of the MBE infrastructure, generating industrial participation, and conceiving and developing useful medical devices. Contributions to international relations of IFMBE, e.g. to MBE of countries in transition.
