From the Editor: What are the priorities for IFMBE?

The main story in this issue is the strategy for IFMBE. You are all invited to comment on the draft and to provide suggestions. The draft strategy has not yet been discussed by the Administrative Council. This is scheduled to take place in the next full council meeting in Seoul in September 1999 (within the regional IFMBE conference). Therefore there is a real possibility to influence it.

Additional input to the process is provided by several council members. After our Nice World Congress I asked Administrative Council members what they thought were the most important issues that the IFMBE should tackle. The statements were published in the March and May 1998 issues of IFMBE News as part of the introduction of the council members. In this issue the replies are repeated.

As our President Jean-Pierre Morucci points out in his message

… this is a problem of individuals being prepared to make sacrifices for the benefit of the community, to put a lot into and take the time to assume responsibility for our actions. We must be realistic in our ambitions and not simply draw up a list of pious hopes that will never be fulfilled.

Please use email (if possible) and address your comments and suggestions to me. IFMBE News and in particular, the web-version will be happy to serve as a forum in moving the strategy forward.

Future of IFMBE News

I have now served as the Editor for nearly two years. During that time the most difficult task has been to obtain news material from our member societies. Although there are almost 50 societies, getting material from them has proven to be extremely difficult. Therefore I want to make a strong plea to all IFMBE members: please provide me with material that you think can be shared with the rest of the medical and biological engineering community. After all, this newsletter is sent to all IFMBE members at no cost to you. We have also had it in the web now for some time. Please make use of this opportunity to share what you have achieved and to learn from others.
