ESEM '99

Bridging the two Millenniums: The Fifth Conference of the European Society for Engineering and Medicine

Barcelona, Spain, 29 May - 2 June 1999

The Fifth ESEM (European Society for Engineering and Medicine) conference (which is sponsored by the IFMBE) takes the opportunity that we are at the end of the millennium to focus on a review of the technological progress made during this century and what is in store for the future the. To enable medical practitioners in all the medical fields to participate and to discuss technological progress with scientists and engineers, the conference is divided into three days, each of which is devoted to a group of organs and functions. The segmentation of the conference will therefore be made vertically for medical topics and horizontally for the technologies, in order to foster networking amongst physicians, engineers and industry representatives.

Medical topics

  • Mobility which characterises the possibility for the different body segments to move according to the specifications of the motor apparatus (bones, joints and muscles)
  • Communication organised in sensorial inputs, speculative and cognitive brain processes and action outputs: oral and written language, mimics and gestures
  • Biological maintenance made by a group of organs and functions responsible for all kinds of metabolisms, energy consumption and excretions. All those organs being located in the thoraco-abdominal cavity

Technology topics

  • Imaging techniques (x-rays, US, CTScan, MRI)
  • Sensors and signal processing
  • Medical computer network (telemedicine)
  • Biomaterials and implants
  • Models and simulation
  • Functional electrical stimulation
  • Artificial organs
  • Biomechanics and medical robotics
  • Cellular and tissue engineering
  • Clinical engineering
  • Drug administration devices
  • Diagnostic techniques
  • Robotics
  • Electronic medical record
  • Clinical decision making
