Life-like perception systems initiative

The objective of Life-like perception systems initiative (LPS) is to promote research into integrated perception-response systems that take their inspiration from the solutions adopted by living systems.

LPS projects

Ten LPS projects were selected following the recommendations of the evaluation session in last November. Short descriptions of the projects are available at the LPS web pages www.cordis.lu/ist/fetbi-sy.htm. In addition to the R&D projects a joint LPS-NI network of excellence was also retained to act as a platform of co-operation and 'glue' within the initiatives (for more information, see www.cordis.lu/ist/fetni-nt.htm).

New initiative on robotics

The detailed planning of FET programme in the 6th Framework Programme has started. FET and the European Robotics Research Network (EURON) organised a brainstorming event in Brussels on 6-7 March 2002 to define what the focus of such an innovation in robotics should be. Three themes, all more or less inspired by biology were suggested: "Super human systems", "Robot ecology", and "The adaptive robotic servant". The report of this event is available at the web address www.cas.kth.se/EURON/eu-euron-brainstorm.

Call for expressions of interest

The European Commission published on 20 March 2002 a call for Expressions of Interest (EoI) regarding research topics for the 6th Framework Programme. You may access all relevant information through the IST home page at www.cordis.lu/fp6/eoi-instruments/.

In case you or your colleagues are preparing or have specific ideas on Integrated Projects, Networks of Excellence (of the type that will be supported in the 6th FP), or proactive initiatives that you would like us (FET) to consider in preparing the 6th Framework, please do not hesitate to submit to the Call specifying 1.1.2.v as the priority area (which corresponds to FET). Note also that the deadline for submissions is on 7 June 2002.
