International Centre of Biocybernetics Polish Aademy of SciencesThe International Centre of Biocybernetics (ICB) of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established in Warsaw in June 1988. The ICB is a multi-national association of the Academies of Science and organisations interested in biocybernetics and healthcare through science and technology. The ICB acts in accordance with the Agreement about the establishment of the ICB as signed by its Parties. Membership to the ICB is open, new members are admitted by applying in writing to the Secretary and signing the Agreement. In 1991 the ICB was appointed and in 1996 re-appointed as WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering. Main task for the ICBThe main objectives of the ICB are the exchange of scientific experience and the improvement of professional qualifications, and the facilitation of research and application in the field of biocybernetics and biomedical engineering. To achieve these aims, the ICB undertakes the following activities:
Scientific councilThe Scientific Council of the ICB is appointed by the Parties. The members of the Scientific Council are distinguished specialists in the field of biocybernetics or biomedical engineering delegated by the Parties. Other persons up to a maximum of 50% of those directly appointed may be invited "ad personam" to become members on the proposal of the Scientific Council. Members serve for a period of three years, unless specifically re-appointed or re-invited for another term. Scientific activityThe ICB organises seminars and special meetings in the following main directions of biocybernetics and biomedical engineering: biosystems, biomeasurements, artificial organs, biomechanics and bioinformatics. The scientific program of seminars includes the recent results of fundamental research of physiological processes as well the problems of new technology and design of biological devices and systems for therapy, life support, clinical diagnosis and information processing. The previous issue of IFMBE News (March 1998) listed the seminars that the ICB is organising this year. Since 1988 the ICB has organised 35 seminars and workshops. The duration of the seminars varies from 5 to 10 days. The number of participants per seminar varies from 40 to 100 persons. All together 1 900 scientists from 29 countries have so far taken part in ICB activities. PublicationsThe journal of "Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering" is the official journal of the ICB. The full text of lecturers delivered at the ICB Seminars are published in "Lecture Notes of the ICB Seminars". Lecturers are requested to supply their texts before the date of the seminar. Other informationLecturers of the Seminars from countries which signed the Agreement are delegated by their Organisations. Other lecturers are invited by the Director of the ICB. The Seminars take place in the ICB headquarters, lecturers and some participants of the Seminars are accommodated in the ICB guest rooms. Seminars of the International Centre for Biocybernetics in 1997:
Agreement concerning the international centre for biocybernetics approved by the Scientific Council of ICB on 22, July 1994 In view of the importance of the fields of biocybernetics and biomedical engineering, and taking account of the need for scientific participation and exchange between Central and Eastern Europe and the rest of the world for the further development of these fields, the signatory scientific institutions, hereinafter called "the Parties":
have all decided to enter into this Agreement. Additional information Director of the ICB: Maciej Nalecz, Prof. Ph.D. Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, 02-109 Warsaw, ul. Ks. Trojdena 4, Poland Tel. (+48 22) 658 28 77; operator; (+48 22) 6582877; fax: (+48 22) 6582872 | ||
