Young Investigator Awards

International Congress on Biological and Medical Engineering
Singapore, December 4 - 7, 2002

The latest International Congress on Biological and Medical Engineering held in Singapore in December 2002 attracted very high quality papers from authors all over the world. The organisers decided to recognise innovation and excellent research in biomedical engineering in several categories. They presented Young Investigator Awards, Outstanding Paper Awards and Honorary Awards. This issue of the IFMBE News is dedicated to the winners of Young Investigator Awards. The report on the winners of the other two categories was published in the January 2003 Issue of the News.

Young Investigator Awards are open to authors who are 35 years of age or younger. The Award itself came in the form of an attractive cash sum and a certificate. These awards were given on the basis of innovation, originality and high impact on biomedical engineering and healthcare. Single-author papers were encouraged. However, in cases of multiple-authored papers, the young investigator had to be the first author and this had to be supported by a letter from his/her supervisor(s) or co-author(s) verifying his/her significant contributions to the research paper.

It was decided that awards should be given to the four young investigators listed below:

Hwa Liang Leo, Georgia Tech, USA
Tetsushi Taguchi, National Institute for Materials, Japan
Alexander Astaras, Institute for System Level Integration, UK
Naoya Sakamoto, Tohoku University, Japan

Within this issue of the News, the award winners present themselves and their research activities.
