Doron Bushi
The winner of the best oral presentation at EMBEC'02 (YIC).
Topic: Cardiovascular Mechanics.
Doron Bushi was born in 1974 in Holon, Israel, and received his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Tel Aviv University in
2000. He is currently completing an M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering at Tel Aviv University. He won the award for his M.Sc.
work, which examined the hemodynamic parameters that govern the distribution of embolic particles in arterial bifurcations.
Bushi's M.Sc. research was academically supervised by Prof. Shmuel Einav of Tel-Aviv University and by Dr. Ygael Grad of
MindGuard Medical Devices Ltd.
MindGuard, the developer of stroke prevention devices, sponsored Bushi's in vitro work on site, at the company's
hemodynamics laboratory. The experiments were conducted using suspensions of rigid, neutrally buoyant sphere-shaped
particles in a water glycerin mixture. Steady and physiological pulsatile laminar flow regimes were controlled digitally
and pumped through a Y-shaped bifurcation model, simulating arterial bifurcations. In the experiment, the particles were
divided into three groups by diameter (0. 6, 1. 5 and 3. 2mm). They were released, under different flow rate ratios between
the two branches, into a stream 75 diameters away from the bifurcation, and were then trapped at the exit by filters to
determine the distribution of the particles. Preliminary results showed that the larger particles distributed preferentially
into larger branches.
Bushi also won 3rd prize for "Exceptional Student Projects" in a student competition organised by the Association of
Engineers and Architects of Israel in June, 2000 for designing and building an experimental computerised system, capable
of simulating physiological pulsatile blood flow in blood vessels.
