XIVth Congress of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology

June 22-25, 2002, Vienna, Austria

This is a summary of the current status of the Conference of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology 2002 June 22-25, Vienna, Austria. If you need further information to the congress venue or background data please refer to our homepage: www.univie.ac.at/oegbmt/ The detailed preliminary program will be available at March 21st at our homepage.

On behalf of the international Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (ISEK), it is our great pleasure to invite you to the fourteenth International Congress, which will be held on June 22-25, 2002 for the first time in Vienna, Austria. The Society continues its long tradition with congresses all over the world. It was in 1968 that the first international meeting of the Society was organized in Montreal. Since then the International Congress was hosted in Barcelona (Spain, 1973), Pavia (Italy, 1976), Boston (USA, 1979), Ljubljana (Slovenia, 1982), Tokyo (Japan, 1985), Enschede (The Netherlands, 1988 & 1996), Baltimore (USA, 1990), Florence (Italy, 1992), Charleston (USA, 1994), Montreal (Canada, 1998) and Sapporo (Japan, 2000).

The Society aims to promote and teach the disciplines of electromyography and kinesiology in normal, pathological, and experimental conditions emphasizing the interactive use of the two disciplines. The members of the Society include a broad range of professionals such as medical doctors, scientists, physiotherapists, engineers, ergonomists, technicians and other who have an interest in research and clinical applications of electrophysiology and kinesiology.

We have received, reviewed and processed 250 contributions up to now. These were assigned to 6 keynote lectures, 6 seminar presentations, 98 oral presentations and 115 posters. 10% of the submitted abstracts were rejected during our international review process.

We start with the Precongress Symposium on surface Electromyography (SEMG) Standards. It consists of a seminar on recommendations on SEMG recording and processing Hands-on Workshop for functional SEMG.

Our keynote lectures are:

RAU GünterFrom Cell to Movement: To what answers does EMG really contribute?
MERLETTI RobertoThe linear electrode array: a tool with many applications
WINTER DavidMotor mechanisms of balance during quiet standing
MANO YukioCortical reorganization in training
ENOKA RogerThe decline in steadiness of submaximal contractions with advancing age
DIMITROVAInterpretation of EMG changes with fatigue: facts, pitfalls and fallacies

There is also a Seminar during the congress held on 'Back Muscle Weakness and Fatigue' with special presentations on measurement methods and clinical implications.

The general Topics of the oral and poster presentations are:

  • Kinesiology
  • Biomechanics
  • Neurophysiology
  • Rehabilitation
  • Ergonomics
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Sports Applications

The special topics are:

  • EMG Processing
  • Evoked Potentials
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
  • Gait, Posture
  • Mechanomyogram
  • Modelling
  • Motor Control
  • Motor Units
