Polish Committee of Biomedical Engineering of SEP
Affiliated to the IFMBE
ACTIVITY REPORT 1997 - 2002
In 1997 the Committee organised five board meetings and four plenary meetings on
biomedical and clinical engineering problems. The Committee also organised the National
Conference "Management of Medical Technologies - Clinical Engineering" in the period of
4-5 December 1997 in Warsaw and helped in organisation of three other conferences:
- "People and Communication" (15-16.05.1997)
- "Modern Systems of Cell Telephones and Human Health" (3.07.1997)
- "Medica - Laboratory '97" (22-24.10.1997).
During plenary meetings the following subjects were discussed: models and simulation of
respiration support, instruments for hemostasis study, interaction of electromagnetic
field with pacemaker activity, electrical safety problems and others.
During the Conference "Modern Systems of Cell Telephones and Human Health" (3.07.1997)
problems concerning influence of high frequency of EMF on cardiostimulators and other
medical equipment, as well as on body heating were discussed.
In 1998 the Committee organised four board meetings and three plenary meetings. During
plenary meetings the following topics were discussed: interaction between
electromagnetic field and human body, magnetometry in biology and medicine,
electrical risk in hospitals, ultrasonic equipment for imaging of organs and their
functions, devices for measurement of blood flow.
During the International Medica - Laboratory '98 Exhibition (Warsaw, 21-22.10.1998) the
National Conference "Medical Office 2000" (for General Practitioners) was also
organised. During the Conference problems of USG and X-ray equipment for imaging of
human organs were discussed. One session was devoted to the celebration of the 100
anniversary of the discovery of polonium and radium by Mary Sklodowska -Curie, who was
born in Poland.
In 1999 three board and plenary meetings of the Committee were held. There were
discussed the following topics: application of MRI in medicine, biomagnetometry and
medical sensors.
The Committee organised in 1999 two Conferences. During the Conference "GSM Cell
Telephone System and Health and Environment Protection - Law, Regulations, Studies,
Facts" (8-9.04.1999) the problem of influence of EMG field on living tissues and
disturbances of medical equipment work was discussed. During the Conference "Medical
Sensors" (22.10.1999), application of ISFET-s for examination of biochemical parameters
and the use of magnetometry for the study of foetal heart activity were discussed.
The Committee organised also a special meeting on "Role of Biomedical Engineers in
Modified Health Care System" (21.06.1999).
In the following years (April 27-28, 2000 and May 10-11, 2001) the Committee organised
two addtional conferences on the impact of telecomunication technology on environment
and the healt care, both named "GSM 900/1800 and Health and Environment Protection -
Law, Regulations, Studies, Facts".
In 2001, October 24-26, the Committee was co-organising the Conference "Medica 2001".
Furthemore, on October 24 the Committee organised the Conference "Problems of Research
production and Maintenance of Medical Products in Relation to EU Requirements".
In 2002, June 6-7, the Committee is organising next Conference on "Cell telephones and
Health and Environment Protection".
The Committee co-operates also with the International Centre of Biocybernetics
(director - Prof. M. Nalecz), which was established in 1988. The collaboration
resulted in arranging of many international conferences, seminars, symposia and 64
workshops.
