1. 12th AGM
The 12th BES AGM was held on the 26th October 2002 at the NUS Orchard Guild House. The meeting was called to
order by the President YT Chew at 12.00 pm. The meeting was adjourned at 2.00 pm. The following members were elected
to the 12th Executive Committee.

2. Establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) and the
Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore) (BES) on the 28th November 2002
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on professional and biomedical engineering activities was signed by
Er. Dr Lock Kai Sang (President IES) and Er. Professor Chew Yong Tian (President BES). The Presidents of IES and BES both
expressed the timeliness of such a collaboration to help spearhead biomedical sciences - a fourth pillar of the
Singapore's economy. The MoU focuses on promoting cooperation and co-ordination of activities and communication
between the two organisations, such as conferences, seminars, workshops and continuing education and programmes.
The Institution of Engineers, Singapore, has been in existence since 1 July 1966 and has over 7500 members. More

3. International Congress on Biological and Medical Engineering, 4th - 7th December 2002

4. BES member's night, 16 March 2003
BES held a members' night on 16 March 2003. Professor Edmund Chao from the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Lab, Johns Hopkins
University, was the guest of honour. Prior to the evening's event, Prof. Chao conducted a short course in clinical
biomechanics.
5. SIM-Open University talk, 16 August 2003
SIM-Open University was having an open house and introduced their BME programme. Mr. Stephen Low, SIM-OU co-ordinator
invited BES to give a short talk on BME and to promote BES membership. The talk was attended by over 30 students.
Peter Lee (Honorary Treasurer) presented BES activities and highlighted some member's research interests.
