BioMed 2002 was the inaugural International Conference and Exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 5 - 8 June 2002. The organizers from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and University of Malaya, believe that BioMed 2002 was a milestone in bringing together academics and practitioners in Engineering & Medicine. The theme "Beyond the Possibles" reflects the desire and commitment to take the Biomedical Engineering discipline further than it has been so far: to take it beyond the state-of-the-art.

The organizers wanted to develop a shared vision as to how biomedical engineers can best contribute to improving our quality of life and to maximize economic and social benefits in a way that is ethically and environmentally responsible through advancement of the discipline.

The objectives of the conference were:

  • to show case innovation in biomedical engineering
  • to provide a forum for presenting current research in Biomedical Engineering
  • to promote regional cooperation and interchange among universities and research institutions
  • to gather academics, scientists, researchers and practitioners in Medicine and Engineering in worldwide
  • to exchange ideas and experiences related to Biomedical Engineering
  • to motivate further developments of technical industries in biomedical engineering
  • to promote the Malaysian vision in going beyond the State-of-the-Art in Biomedical Research

These topics were addressed by the following distinguished lecturers:

Wan Abu Bakar: Motion Analysis and Sports Biomechanics in Malaysia.

Jean Pierre Morucci: Brain Activation Imaging Using a Resistor Mesh Model for Fusion with MRI.

Dov Jaron: Challenges in Biomedical Engineering Research and Education.

John Enderle: New Advances in Neurosensory Control of Saccades

J. C. Barbenel: Tissue Mechanics and Engineering - from Research into Clinical Implant

Audosark: Keep Abreast with Glucose Transporter

Apart from the already mentioned organizer, the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the confernce was organized in association with the Faculty of Associated Medical Sciences, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. The Conference was endorsed by the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering, International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine, and co-organised by the Malaysian Ministry of Health, National Heart Institute, Institution of Engineers, Faculty of Medicine and the Tourism Promotion Board.
