Medical Engineering listed education and training information

Screen shotBiomedical Engineering is a dynamic profession where continuous technological advances and change create a need for education, training and continuous professional development for the biomedical engineer. A large volume of relevant information, concerning such activities, exists distributed over a large number of sources. An Internet search on biomedical engineering and education will normally yield some tens of thousands matches.

The Internet based service MELETI (Medical Engineering Listed Education & Training Information) is an initiative aiming to establish an electronic documentation point for information on training, education and research activities with a specific focus in the field of Biomedical Engineering at a European level. This web-based service aims to offer information and guidance on education, training and continuous professional development activities in biomedical engineering and its related subspecialties.

The service is addressed to two main user groups. First, it is intended to meet the information needs of students and professionals in the field by establishing an electronically based documentation point for information on training and educational activities. MELETI can guide:

  • Students to their graduate or postgraduate studies
  • Professionals to their continuing education
  • Unemployed professionals to career reorientation

On the other hand, MELETI is an equally valuable aid for the information providers for the purposes of promoting related services offered by:

  • Universities and training centres
  • Undertakings/ as-sociations/ networks
  • Commission of the EU and authorities
  • Publishers and book shops

The types of information provided by the MELETI service include:

  • Directories of Biomedical Engineering university courses (primarily in Europe)
  • Training courses
  • R&D projects
  • Inventories of books and journals
  • Catalogues of training tools in audiovisual or multimedia format
  • Listings of relative web documents and sites.

The relevant records may be inserted by the information providers themselves. The main advantage of MELETI is that all information is validated and presented in a standardised format. This guarantees an equal level of detail and increased objectivity, thus allowing comparative evaluations and informed decisions.

This service is being developed within the framework of the MELETI project, under the Leonardo da Vinci Programme. MELETI is co-ordinated by INBIT with the participation of five partner organisations from five European countries:

  • Medical Informatics Department of the Vrije University of Brussels
  • National Institute for Hospital and Medical Engineering (ORKI) in Budapest
  • Bioengineering Unit of the Federico II University of Naples
  • National School of Public Health of the New University of Lisbon
  • Medical Physics Department of the University of Patras
