At the latest Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing, held in Lemessos, Cyprus in June 1998, the Croatian Medical and Biological Engineering Society CROMBES, was entrusted to organise (on behalf of the IFMBE) the IX MEDICON in 2001. The conference will be organised in co-operation with the national BME Societies from the Mediterranean region and in association with the transnational societies IEEE EMBS and ESEM. For the venue of the next MEDICON, we have chosen PULA, an ancient city at the Northern Adriatic coast. Pula is famous for its 3000-year old history and its amphitheatre, the sixth largest in the world. Many cultural and historical monuments dominate its panorama and represent today the unique setting of various cultural and artistic events. Tourist facilities are located outside the town, in woods close to the sea. Beaches stretch along 190 km of beautiful and indented coast. Pula has its own airport and in 2001 it will be reached through new highways connected to those existing in Italy, Slovenia, Austria and Croatia. The conference is to be held in June 2001 (12-15 June) when the climate is the most pleasant in this region. The objective of the conference is to provide the latest scientific, technical and engineering information, as well as to present significant developments in biomedical engineering and computing. The conference program will consist of both, invited and submitted papers dealing with new research, development and technologies in this field. The conference will enable the participants to meet and exchange their experiences. They can share their views with experts and associate with colleagues from all over the world. The aim of this conference is to promote biomedical engineering, to encourage its greater involvement in clinical practice and to give recognition to its importance and relevance in biomedicine and healthcare. During the Conference (12-15 June, 2001), invited lectures, oral and poster sessions are planned. Further, BME societies, scientists and/or groups of scientists are invited to organise specialised Symposia on specific BMEC topics. Student competitions will be organised to encourage young colleagues to take part and present their work at the conference. On Monday 11 June, 2001, we are planing to organise workshops on BMEC subjects. The conference, the Croatian MBE Society and there through the IFMBE will also be promoted at Zagreb Fairs Exhibition Medicine and Technology and Dental Show, one of the largest International Fairs of Medical, Laboratory, Dental Equipment and Pharmacy in the Mediterranean region.
