Estonian Society for Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics

The Estonian Society was established in 1994, and today the total number of members is 60 of which there are 58 regular members and two student members. Three main professional disciplines are represented: medical engineering, medical physics and medicine. The society is a member of the following international organisations: IFMBE, IOMP and EFOMP (European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics).

Currently, the board of the Society has members, and a new board was elected in February 1996 for a two year term. Most members of the board represent one of two Estonian Universities: Tallinn Technical University and Tartu University. At the end of this article is a list of the members of the board and the delegates for IFMBE.

The aims of the Estonian Society for Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics are as follows:

  • to promote science and technology in its field of interest;
  • to co-ordinate the collaboration of physicians and technical experts;
  • to organise publication activities within its areas;
  • to organise professional and continuing education courses within its area;
  • to collaborate and exchange information with other professional societies and institutions in Estonia and abroad.

The Society has organised workshops and seminars on different subjects in biomedical engineering, where invited researchers and physicians from Estonia have given lectures on interesting topics of current research. The main subjects this year have been: measurements, pacemakers, heart rate variability, mathematical modelling of heart dynamics and blood, patient monitoring, processing and monitoring of ECG signals.

The Estonian Programme on Biomedical Engineering, which is aimed at fundamental science, research and education in Estonia, was developed in co-operation with the Society.

A satellite symposium with ten participating countries on bioelectromagnetic and biomechanic measurements connected to 10th Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering was organised in Tallinn in June 13-15 in co-operation with Biomedical Engineering Centre of Tallinn Technical University. Members of the Society worked on the International Advisory Committee, Scientific Committee and Organising Committee of 10th Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering held in Tampere.

The 11th Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering will be held in Tallinn in June 1999.
