International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering

The International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering is a member organisation of the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE). It was established in 1996 by action of the IFMBE General Assembly.

The purpose of the Academy is to conduct programs of a broad nature which will serve to encourage young people entering the field and support not only their development, but also the field in which they are entering. In addition, the Academy, upon request of the IFMBE Administrative Council, is also intended to serve as a resource for IFMBE and its various units. Finally, the Academy will honour individuals who have distinguished themselves in the field of medical and biological engineering. The underlying philosophy is that the Academy is to be composed of distinguished members from the field who accept the special responsibility of helping those entering the field and who are in the early stages of their career.

Membership of the Academy is made up of Fellows, who are persons who have distinguished themselves in the field of medical and biological engineering. A candidate for becoming a Fellow is someone who has made identifiable contributions to the theory or practice of medical and biological engineering, or who has demonstrated unusual accomplishment in promoting the field of medical and biological engineering.

In establishing the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering, the General Assembly approved a membership committee, the composition of which is listed at the end of this article. It is the responsibility of this membership committee to select an initial group of Founding Fellows. This founding group will be inducted into the Academy at the 1997 World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering to be held in Nice, France, September 14-19, 1997.

A General Meeting of the International Academy will be held at least once every three years, normally at the time of the World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.

The Membership Committee of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering is made up as follows:
