Visit to the 1997 IFMBE Congress venue in Nice

If you have never been to Nice, you will have the opportunity in September 1997 to visit one of the most charming cities in France where the IFMBE Congress will be held. When in Nice, don't miss the beautiful old city and its famous flower market. Wander among the vegetable and fruit stalls; experience the many fragrances filling the air; or visit the Chagall or Matisse museums.

When you tire of Nice, you can venture into the well known neighbouring towns such as Monte Carlo and Cannes, or rent a car and drive up into the mountains, or cross the border into Italy, which is very close. Once you have tired as a tourist, it may be time to attend the International Congress.

During the last meeting of the IFMBE Administrative Council, I had the opportunity, together with other Council members, to meet with the Congress organising committee and to visit the Nice Acropolis, which will be the site of the 1997 IFMBE Congress.

The Nice Acropolis is a most impressive location for the Congress. The main auditorium, which will be used for the opening ceremonies, can accommodate more that 2500 people. A smaller auditorium and several meeting rooms will be used for the platform and poster presentations, and the commercial and scientific exhibits. The facility is extremely flexible, permitting the conference organisers to configure the space into just about any number or size of rooms.

Having been open only about ten years, the Acropolis provides the most modern administration for supporting the Congress operation, and up-to-date facilities for the individual scientific sessions. All sessions and accompanying events will take place in the same buildings. The conference organisers are planning as many as 20 parallel scientific sessions to accommodate the presentations by the attending medical physicists and the medical and biological engineers.

The IFMBE Technical programme will be managed by Professor Jean Pierre Morruci, who is Director of the INSERM Unit which is in charge of biomedical technology research and industrial technology transfer. The local organising committee is chaired by Marie Agnés Rix-Montel, University of Nice, and is supported by seven dedicated engineers and physicists who live in the area. They are preparing to make our visit to Nice as pleasant and memorable as possible.

Many hotels are available to the Congress attendees, most of them within walking distance of the Acropolis. There are also numerous restaurants offering French cuisine, as well as foods from many other parts of the world, throughout the city of Nice.

So, in addition to learning about recent advances in your field and meeting old friends and colleagues, you can expect to enjoy all that Nice and its surrounding area can offer, and feast on superb French food and wine. I hope to meet you there in September 1997.
