EMBEC '05
3rd European Medical & Biological Engineering Conference,
Regional IFMBE European Conference on Biomedical Engineering
Prague, Czech Republic November 20–25, 2005
Following the highly successful EMBEC '99 and EMBEC '02 held in Vienna in 1999 and 2002, the EMBEC '05 is going to be
organised by the Czech Society for Biomedical Engineering and Medical Informatics (CSBMEMI) with the Czech Technical
University in Prague, the European Society for Engineering & Medicine (ESEM), IEEE Czechoslovakia Section, European
Centre for Medical Informatics Statistics and Epidemiology of the Charles University, the Czech Academy of Sciences
(EuroMISE), and IMECO TC13 as co-organisers and endorsed by the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering
and Science (EAMBES). It will take place in the Prague Congress Centre, Prague, Czech Republic, on November 20-25, 2005.
The Prague Congress Centre has been thoroughly reconstructed for the recent meeting of the International Monetary Fund
and can now comfortably host congresses of virtually any size.
Its strategic position is given by its location at the metro line and easy accessibility from the main hotels. Over the
years it has become famous also for its beautiful foyers, views of the city of Prague and especially of the unforgettable
view of the Prague Castle panorama.
The regularly updated EMBEC '05 homepage http://www.embec05.org
provides all relevant information and important dates as well as the possibility of electronic registration and
abstract submission. The scientific program of EMBEC '05 will include a wide selection of plenary lectures and
tutorials provided by distinguished experts from the whole world. The Conference will thus be a unique opportunity to
get "first-hand" information on the most exciting advances in the field of biomedical engineering and promising activities
in research and development. Interested individual experts, groups and/or institutions alike are encouraged to submit
proposals on organising sessions on specific topics. Those interested in organising such sessions can still contact
the Conference secretariat (embec05@guarant.cz). The Organising Committee will
be pleased to provide the infrastructure needed. Submission of free presentations (to be assessed by members of
the International Advisory Board) is equally welcome. Scientific sessions will be complemented by industrial
exhibition. Manufacturers of health care technology are invited to present here their products as well as results of their
R&D activities.
Guarant, Ltd., the professional conference organising agency will prepare an attractive social program including the
Gala Evening at the Prague Castle, current seat of the President of the Czech Republic.
The CSBMEMI, the main organiser of EMBEC '05, was founded in 1975 and thus is one of the younger member societies of the
Czech Medical Association J. E. Purkyne. Besides the organisation of specialised seminars, symposia and conferences,
activities of the society also include cooperation with the Ministry of Health on legislation related both to
health-care professionals and the technology used in health-care. The society is also involved in setting up programs
for biomedical engineering education at technical universities. International bounds are ensured by the CSBMEMI
membership in IFMBE, IMIA and EFMI. A special asset of the society is its own journal "Physician and Technology".
The society is governed by the Executive Committee, the election period of which is four years. Current head of the EC
Dr. Cmíral serves now also as the President of the EMBEC '05.
The Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) has traditionally been the closest link of the CSBMEMI with the academic
field. Being founded in 1707, the CTU is one of the oldest technical universities and currently the most important
technical university in the Czech Republic. At present it has approx. 15 000 students enrolled in engineering courses.
This represents more than 10% of all university students and more than 30% of all students enrolled in engineering
courses in the country. CTU with its 1300 members of academic staff is also one of the largest research institutions
in the Czech Republic. Research is undertaken at CTU in all the basic disciplines taught at the university: i.e. in
mathematics, physics, computer science, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear and
physical engineering, architecture, transportation science, and in many interdisciplinary areas as well, biomedical
engineering being the most important one in this group.
Looking forward to welcoming you in the heart of Europe at the EMBEC '05 in November
Dr. Jaromir Cmiral
President, EMBEC '05
