NIBE Professioanl Development Course 2004 ReportThe Oil City of Port Harcourt in the treasure base of Nigeria played host to the 2004 Professional Development Course of NIBE. This took place in the University of Port Harcourt between the 26th and 28th of October, 2004. The theme, Current Trends in Medical & Biological Engineering, was designed to ensure that the participant's technical and professional knowledge was brought up to date with current global views of biomedical engineering. Day One, Tuesday 26th October 2004 witnessed the arrival and registration of participants for the course. The Opening Ceremony formalities were fully observed, afterwards the course had a break for coffee. At about 1.30pm, the course resumed with a paper entitled "The Morphology of Man" by K. I. Nkuma-Udah. The paper was thoroughly discussed by the participants present. Next, a paper entitled "Basic Electrical/Electronic Concepts" by S. A. Ike, another entitled "Biomedical Equipment Design" by E. O. Nwoye and finally one entitled "HIV/Aids as a Global Scourge" by G. I Ndubuka were presented and discussed thoroughly. Day one came to a close at about 6.00pm. Day Two, Wednesday 27th October 2004 started at about 10.00am and three papers were presented. These were "Engineering Aspects of Human System" by K. I. Nkuma-Udah; "Instrumental Systems and Techniques" by E. Enyi and "Issues in Genetic Engineering" by W. E. Anetekhai. The papers were discussed in turn and day two came to a close at about 6.00pm. Day Three, Thursday 28th October 2004 was the last day, which started at about 9.00am. It featured two papers: "Occupational Health in Nigeria" by O.O. Ndukwe and "Industrial Quality Assurance" by S. I. Iwuoha. Both papers were discussed and at the end, the course broke briefly for coffee. At about 11.00am there was a revision of the entire papers followed by a Course Evaluation for the participants. A closing luncheon was held to mark the end of day three and the close of COURSE 2004 at about 2.00pm.
