CHART - Chartography of Medical and Biological Engineering in Europe
Objectives
The objectives of the CHART project are:
- To structure the medical and biological engineering and sciences (MBES) research sector
in Europe in accordance with the philosophy of the European Research Area (ERA).
- To develop tools for co-ordinating European BME related RTD.
- To prepare for the future challenges as outlined in the ERA documents concerning
technologies for health, notably in relation with problems in the ageing population,
handicapped persons, infectious, degenerative and chronic diseases, genome research and
neurosciences.
The CHART project is funded by the European Commission (QLG-CT-2202-30535).

Expected results
The structuring of this research sector in Europe is expected to mobilise the European MBES
community for the European Research Area initiative. This will lead to the creation of more
functional networks in selected MBES domains, the reaching of the "critical mass" and also
to the stimulation of innovation and entrepreneurship and the transfer of results from research
and academia to industry for further exploitation.
The results are characterised by the following:
- Identify emerging important fields of scientific research and RTD in MBES.
- Build and create an infrastructure of universities, research organisations and industries
that are able and willing to engage in scientific research and RTD in the emerging areas of
MBES.
- Support the competitiveness and development of European industries in these fields.
- Create and maintain a list of MBES resources and leading scientists and experts in the
field of MBES.
- Create awareness of the impact of MBES for health care, industry and society at large.
- Active dissemination of the results through a web site.
- Strengthen the bridges to American and Japanese research activities in these fields.
Registration
CHART is conceived as a web-based system accessible by a variety of users categories, each one
using a particular functionality of the system. Five categories of users are identified within
the CHART system:
BMES experts
National and European societies
Academic programs
R&D institutions
Industries
CHART website offers users the possibility of introducing their data using registration forms,
which include personal or collective data, according to a MBES Keywords Map.
Searching
The CHART website includes a search functionality which may use names, countries or keywords as
keys to find members of the European MBES community.
Moreover, there is a graphical map, to obtain a MBES cartography in any European country.
