Brian Brown - FJC Chair

Professor Brian Brown chairs the Federation Journal Committee. He graduated in Physics from the University of London in 1962 and subsequently completed his PhD in neurophysiology from the University of Sheffield, England. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and also of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in London. He was awarded the Founder's Prize of the HPA - now the Institute for Physics and Engineering in Medicine - in 1972.

After graduation he worked as a Development Engineer with Pye Ltd in Cambridge and subsequently as a Heath Physicist at Berkeley Nuclear Power Station. During 1977/8 he was employed for a year as a UN Expert in Medical Electronics in Hyderabad, India. Later he became a full professor of Medical Physics in Sheffield. He served as one of the two UK representatives on the EU Concerted Action Committee on Biomedical Engineering for several years during the 1980s. He took semi-retirement in 2002 from his post as Chairman of the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals/University of Sheffield.

Brian's major interest is in Medical Electronics involving research and development work on the techniques of physiological measurement, the production of instrumentation and its application to both clinical research and routine patient measurement. His major areas of my research have been into the recording and understanding of the electrical activity of the gut, the analysis of nerve action potentials, the use of electromyography to investigate and identify carriers of muscular dystrophy and the development of aids for the profoundly deaf.

His current research interests are the practical realisation of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) and Tissue Spectroscopy as routine clinical tools. He pioneered the development of EIT and initiated European Union Concerted Action Programmes in this field. He has contributed about 250 scientific publications, patents and books.
