IEEE-EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Signal Processing

Advanced biomedical signal processing for clinical application and medical decision-making

Certosa di Pontignano, University of Siena, Italy 27 June - 4 July 1999
First announcement

On behalf of the organisers of the International Summer School on Biomedical Signal Processing of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, we have the pleasure in inviting you to join us at the Certosa di Pontignano (Siena, Italy) for an exciting and stimulating week of learning, teaching and brain storming on advanced biomedical signal processing methods for clinical application and decision-making.

The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society has initiated a series of Summer Schools with the aim of providing the participants with state-of-the-art knowledge on emerging areas in biomedical engineering. As part of these ongoing efforts, the 1999 edition of the IEEE-EMBS International Summer School will focus on tutorial presentations of the applications of the advanced signal processing methods in clinical diagnosis, medical decision-making, uncertainty management in clinical decision-making, medical informatics and knowledge-based information system for interpretation, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring tasks.

In each presentation, the techniques and the algorithms will be illustrated, followed by the application to a specific problem in biomedicine. The participants will immediately be able to see how each technique works in practice. Exercises will be included which will range from straightforward problems which measure comprehension of basic concepts, to more challenging clinical problems. In addition, comparative analyses of different approaches will be given.

Prominent experts in the area of biomedical signal processing, medical decision-making, medical informatics, medicine, signal processing and applied physiology will introduce novel techniques and algorithms as well as their clinical or physiological applications.

We encourage engineers, medical researchers, computer scientists, physicists and applied mathematicians to join us and to learn about recent developments in signal processing and their applications in diagnosis, treatment and patient monitoring tasks.

The Summer School will be held at the Certosa di Pontignano, 8km away from Siena in the same place where it was held in 1995. Built in the 14th century, the Certosa di Pontignano Monastery is owned by the University of Siena. The serene atmosphere of the Monastery is an ideal site for reflection, meditation, but even more so, a perfect place to hold in-depth discussions. The nearby city of Siena is one the most fascinating medieval towns in Italy which is famous for a horse race (the Palio) which will be held on Friday 2 July 1999.

The registration fee is 1200 US$ and includes accommodation for one week at the Certosa, meals, coffee breaks and lecture materials. Prospective applicants must send a two-page curriculum vitae with a summary of professional activities and list of publications, preferably by email, before 28 February 1999. The admission to the School will be decided upon a selection made by the Steering Committee. Notification of the acceptance will be made by 31 March 1999.
