IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society ConferenceFor the second time an IEEE EMBS Conference will be held in Europe, co-sponsored by the IFMBE. Amsterdam, the Netherlands, will be the host city for the 18th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society from 31 October to 3 November 1996. The Conference theme 'Bridging disciplines for biomedicine' reflects the belief that the Conference will be relevant for engineers, physicians, healthcare/nursing professionals and basic life scientists. Readers are cordially invited to come to Amsterdam to actively participate in the Conference, and to enjoy the city of Amsterdam with its tradition of intellectual freedom and nautical way of life. The IEEE EMBS conferences have grown to be among the leading annual meetings in biomedical engineering. The 18th Conference will cover diverse fields, ranging from neuromuscular systems to critical care and anaesthesia monitoring, from molecular electronics to instrumentation, and from neurotechnology to cardiovascular applications. A relatively high percentage of contributions to the Conference will be posters. The facilities at the conference centre (RAI international exhibition and conference centre) will allow a number of them to be presented in an interactive, multimedia computerised fashion as ComputerPosters and VideoTapePosters. The Conference Proceedings will be published only on CD-ROM. The CD-ROM will also carry the Proceedings of the four previous Conferences. Special workshops will provide tutorial background for current topics of major interest in biomedical engineering, and mini symposia will be devoted to new and promising developments in the field. Leading experts will organise and participate in these programmes. The student paper competition is another highlight. The Conference Chair is Herman B. K. Boom, the Deputy Conference Chair is Charles J. Robinson, and the Programme co-chairs are Wim L. C. Rutten and Michael R. Neuman. The deadline for the receipt of student and regular papers is 1 May 1996, and the registration deadline for reduced rates is 1 September 1996.
